The Rake
In its ordinary use, the rake appears a mild instrument,
separating fallen leaves, stray sticks, the odd bit of litter
out of the grass that lies beneath; when the rake
has passed over, taking its bundle, there below
looking undisturbed and indeed refreshed
is the green grass, repaired and made whole.
But when brought to bear on the more complex
and interesting plants, bending and twisting them
out of shape, severing blooms and breaking stalks,
the rake begins to look more an instrument of violence.
