THE ELUSIVE, WINGED BEAST

When I wake up, you are at my side,
but by nine, you are nowhere to be found.

Despite my careful planning, you sneak up
and swallow my days whole, and shorten all my nights.

I hold your hands to slow you down, yet,
like an exuberant toddler, you tug and race ahead.

Are you avoiding me, as I try
to clone you each day and fill you to the brim?

It’s no wonder
you wait for no man, or woman!

Instead, you fly each present moment into the future,
and leave the past, far, far behind.
