After

Sorrow and care licked at our bodies
until her wedding ring no longer
fit its finger and
she wore it on the right hand.

In homes close and far,
Visiting, I found myself taken aside:
Can’t you do something?
I’d be asked. She’s so thin.

And just what is it you think I’ve
been telling you all, all these months?

And everyone kept telling me,
you’ve lost weight,
you look so good.
