Then

Like cows munching
epic fields
of minted grass
We lounged in summer fields
our youthfulness
proportioned
by
equal
amounts
of energy and
sleep that
momentarily
shifting locale
could rouse us
to the Cause of the week-
end
our bodies crashing against the breakers
wanting more
than we could possibly sustain

Now
This time
when
energy shifts
slowly
accompanied by pain
each movement carrying with it
a shock of recognition
as we shrink
retreat
move forward in
some precious unknown way
like porpoises about to bank
savouring each
brush against
the current
How does this energy
sustain ?
Fueled
by time
by the promise
of being loved
and loving
again
again
