Straight from my Soul - by JustRon
When it’s late, late at night
and I’m alone, it’s just me.
That’s when my mind, my Soul start to wander
so my spirit flows free.
I write a line to begin,
I set my mind to the wind,
then bring it back to myself
when my time’s at an end.
I’ve been to ends of our universe,
far, far distant places…
I’ve traveled backward in time
just so I could recall all the lost faces.
In Jamaica and in Haiti
I learned the arts of the voodoo.
I ran barefoot through the jungles of Africa
I stood beside Shaka and I ruled the Zulus.
I’ve been an Egyptian child,
I played on the banks of the Nile.
I sat by the throne of King Ramses, King Tut,
and Queen Neferatiti. yeah and we rapped for a while.
But it was the invasion of my Motherland,
that found my Soul on a boat.
With all my sisters and brothers,
my fathers and mothers
and a chain on my throat.
And in our Civil Rights Era… I already knew the outcome.
Still, I cried with the millions
when they shot King and they shot Malcolm.
I’ve learned the laws of Islam,
I’ve watched the rise and the fall… of minister Farrakhan
I saw the shooting of Huey P. Newton,
still I know my Panther Powers goin’ on.
But after all that, I ask was it worth it,
is our goal really in our reach?
That’s when my Soul wanders through the riots
they had down at Virginia Beach.
See, I know it gets worse
‘cause I’ve seen ignorance stalking…
in places like L.A. and Bensonhurst,NY
cause my Soul died on the street beside Yusef Hawkins.
Now, after all that, is our country really the greatest?
I mean, who can truly tell?
All I know is I cried with the nation
the day the Twin Towers fell.
And i watch as getting a tank of gas
is something none of us wanted to do.
It made me cry and it made me laugh
to find out black men can be can be snipers too.
So…
after all that, I bring it back to the nest.
I become one with myself,
allow my Soul to rest.
Y’know, I realize there’s no sacrifice
that’s too big if you really wanna reach your goal.
And it’s taught me how to live…
so I live…
Straight from my Soul.
