Pecan Sandy

You cannot now and never will eat the first Pecan Sandy
from the package brought to the class party
by the girl whose clothes were as a rule
curiously discolored by having been laundered in
the well water they used at her house and who had been
marked out for the cold and cruel invisibility held in store
by classmates everywhere—though you knew then
what she felt and what it would have meant.
